There is a huge variety of possibilities but first you have to get the right education for being a medical assistant. You can get this from either a vocational school or a 2 year college has a medical assistant program. You can expect to take a variety of different classes during the course of your medical assisting training.
You can expect medical assistant classes to cover all kinds of material. You'll learn about physiology, anatomy, medical terminology, lab techniques, clinical procedures, medical transcription, bookkeeping, processing of medical insurance claims, ethics in medicine and so much more. In an accredited medical assistant educational program you will probably be given an opportunity to intern in an actual medical office or hospital to learn the job by actually doing it and watching it be done by experienced professionals.
While there are lots of things you are going to learn about in school, there are some skills that a good medical assistant develops on his or her own. For example, you must be friendly and well groomed. It is important to have excellent people skills because some patients may be contrary or anxious. And, you want to be able to care for a patient without becoming emotionally invested yourself. Not only that, but you must be comfortable with some of the more unpleasant parts of the job. If you have a problem with blood or people in pain this may not be the job for you.
As mentioned before, these are qualities that medical assistant training may touch on, but that are more likely part of your personality. It takes a special kind of person to work in the field of medicine. Not only do you have to be committed to getting your education, you also need to be willing to perform whatever duties you are called upon within your job description. One minute you might be filing medical records or doing transcription, the next you might be taking a patient's temperature. It is important to possess the ability to move from one task to another without becoming flustered as job tasks change not only by the day but the minute in some medical facilities.
